Populus ‘Crows Nest’ has a narrow, fastigiate form and is well-suited for use in shelter belts. Its new leaves are red-orange, maturing to a dark-green color on the upper surface and light-green below with a red midrib. It can tolerate some drought, and it has a low to moderate resistance to poplar leaf rust. Its leaves turn yellow in the autumn. Populus ‘Crows Nest’ is deciduous, not native to New Zealand, and is a hybrid between Populus x canadensis (syn. Populus x euramericana) and Populus nigra. Populus ‘Crows Nest’ was developed in New Zealand by Manaaki Whenua (Landcare Research) and was released in 1994 (PVR 936).
