Forms a stately, pyramidal tree with well-spaced branches and rugged, corky bark. Handsome, shining, five to seven-lobed, maple-shaped leaves. A riot of red, orange, yellow, and purple autumn leaves over a long period. Colours well in all climates. In dry soil, produces a taproot that helps reinforce it against wind, but in wetter soil, only grows superficial roots and cannot tolerate much wind.
