Magnolia 'Lois' produces well-formed, cup-shaped blooms with bright-yellow color, which emerge from green buds. The flowers are up to 8cm long and have nine tepals. They typically appear alongside the leaves during a period of four to five weeks in mid to late-spring. Magnolia 'Lois' has a rounded, conical shape and is considered to be one of the best yellow magnolias available. Magnolia 'Lois' is deciduous, not native to New Zealand, and a hybrid between Magnolia acuminata and the hybrid formed between Magnolia acuminata and Magnolia denudata. 'Lois' was produced in 1964 by Lola Koerting at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in New York City, New York, United States and was named in 1998 after Lois Carswell, a trustee of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

Foliage

This is a general guide. When a plant flowers, fruits and colours up depends on the climate where you live and on the season. If timing matters, please reach out to our team.

Foliage Type

Evergreen plants retain foliage year-round but still shed and replace some leaves gradually as part of their normal growth cycle, rather than losing them all at once.

Deciduous plants shed all their leaves for part of the year (usually in autumn and winter), usually in response to colder temperatures or dry seasons, often producing seasonal colour before leaf drop.

Semi-evergreen plants sit between the two, keeping most of their foliage but losing some or all leaves briefly under cooler or drier conditions before quickly regrowing them.
