This rare yellow-flowered Pōhutukawa is considered a "landmark tree" by the city of San Francisco. It was planted by Victor Reiter, founder of the California Horticultural Society, circa 1930s. I was told that it's one of only three such trees in California. Metrosideros excelsa 'Aurea' originates from the Bay of Plenty region of Aotearoa New Zealand. The white-flowered branches on the left are from a unique Leptospermum hybrid cultivated by Reiter.

This is a rare cultivar of Metrosideros excelsa that produces yellow flowers from early to mid-summer. Metrosideros excelsa ‘Moon Maiden’ thrives in coastal situations and can tolerate poor soils, wet, and drought conditions. It forms a large, broad-headed tree with thick, green leaves that have silver-grey undersides. Metrosideros excelsa ‘Moon Maiden’ can be pruned to form hedges and screens or left as a specimen.
