
This rare yellow-flowered Pōhutukawa is considered a "landmark tree" by the city of San Francisco. It was planted by Victor Reiter, founder of the California Horticultural Society, circa 1930s. This is a rare form of Metrosideros excelsa that produces yellow flowers from early to mid-summer. Metrosideros excelsa ‘Aurea’ thrives in coastal situations and can tolerate poor soils, wet, and drought conditions. It forms a large, broad-headed tree with thick, green leaves that have silver-grey undersides. Metrosideros excelsa ‘Aurea’ can be pruned to form hedges and screens or left as a specimen.
