Gladiolus (mixed)
Sword Lily
A colourful mix of Gladiolus (Gladioli) produces tall, slender stems 80–120 cm high with striking summer blooms in red, pink, white, purple, and bi-colours. Plant in full sun in well-drained soil; mound heavy soil for better drainage. Protect from strong winds and spray every 2–3 weeks with insecticide and fungicide to prevent pests and disease. Corms can be timed to flower any time during summer by planting about 90 days before desired blooms, avoiding frost. Remove faded flowers but leave foliage until it dies back. Lift and store corms in a cool, dark, ventilated place over winter, then replant in spring for continued displays. They are being held in cool storage and should be planted as soon as possible on arrival. They are A grade lilies. Size 14/16 or bigger on average. Flowers last around 3–5 weeks, depending on the weather — warmer conditions shorten the bloom time. A mix of colours helps extend the overall flowering period, as Yellows are usually first to flower (around 90–100 days) and some Whites can take up to 120 days. For even longer display, stagger planting (e.g. 25 bulbs per week) to add up to another 4 weeks of blooms. Gladiolus is native to South Africa.
