Erect, pyramidal tree. Young leaves are a bronze colour. Has larger leaves than our native kauri, Agathis australis. Protect from frosts and wind when young. Also needs moist soil during dry periods while establishing. Will tolerate light frosts and heavy clay soils when established. Prefers moist, well-drained soils.

Taxonomy and Etymology
Family: Araucariaceae, araucaria family, an ancient family of coniferous trees.
Genus: Agathis, ἀγαθίς (agathís, Greek, noun), meaning 'ball of thread', in reference to the appearance of the female cone. Commonly known as kauri or dammara, a genus of evergreen trees.
Species: Agathis robusta, rōbusta (Latin, adjective), meaning 'robust, strong', in reference to its vigorous growth habit.
Synonyms: Agathis palmerstonii
