Prefers moist, well-drained soils.

Family: Araucariaceae, araucaria family, an ancient family of coniferous trees.
Genus: Agathis, agathis, derived from the Greek noun ἀγαθίς (agathís), meaning 'ball of thread', in reference to the appearance of the female cone. Commonly known as kauri or dammara, a genus of evergreen trees.
Species: Agathis australis, austrālis (Latin, adjective), meaning 'southern', in reference to this species' native geographical location. Does not necessarily mean from Australia.
