Young trees are quite shrubby and upright, forming a large canopy after many decades. Rich, green leaves have wavy edges. Pink-red flowers are produced through most of the year and attract tuis, while wood pigeons favour the red berries. Tolerant of wind and coastal exposure, but only light frosts. Evergreen tree that grows at a moderate rate to reach 8m (H) x 4m (W) in 10 years.
