Pyrus pyrifolia ‘Hosui’
Pear
Pyrus pyrifolia ‘Hosui’ has golden-brown skin, and is extremely juicy with fine-grain textured flesh, a rich flavour and tastes distinctly of brandy. Partly sel-fertile but will produce more fruit when planted near another Asian Pea, or Bartlett variety. Early spring brings dainty white flowers, and copper bronze foliage, followed by fruit in mid-summer, and finally bright red leaves in autumn. Prune in late spring to early summer to encourage the best crop. Pyrus pyrifolia ‘Hosui’ will easily grow in fertile well-drained soils and full sun, but will need shelter and protection from frosts. Pyrus pyrifolia is deciduous and native to China. Pyrus pyrifolia ‘Hosui’ was first developed in the 1970’s by the National Horticulture Research Station of Japan.
