Pseudopanax crassifolius
Horoeka
This narrow-growing tree has a tall, erect trunk, adding height and structure to the landscape. The juvenile leaves are long and narrow, and hang from the main trunk, creating a unique and striking look. After many years, the foliage changes to a small head of leaves, which vary in color from dark-green to orange-brown, usually with an orange-yellow midrib. Pseudopanax crassifolius provides a focal point for restricted sites where a hardy, dramatic tree is required. In mid-summer to early-autumn, Pseudopanax crassifolius produces small, green-yellow flowers, adding a touch of delicate beauty to the garden. Pseudopanax crassifolius is similar to Pseudopanax ferox but has less prominently-toothed leaves. Pseudopanax crassifolius is evergreen and native to New Zealand.
