Prunus salicina ‘Burbank’
Japanese Plum
This plum cultivar produces large, sweet and juicy fruit with yellow flesh and dark-red, round skin. It is a heavy cropper, yielding fruit in mid-summer. Prunus salicina ‘Burbank’ features white flowers in spring and yellow autumn leaves. Although it is partially self-fertile, planting it with another cultivar such as Prunus salicina ‘Santa Rosa’ can result in better yields. Prunus salicina is deciduous and native to Russia, China, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Learn more about Prunus salicina. Prunus salicina ‘Burbank’ was selected in 1885 by Luther Burbank (1849-1926) in Santa Rosa, California, United States from seedlings he had received from Isaac Bunting in Yokohama, Japan. Luther sent one to Professor Van Deman, a pomologist for the United States Department of Agriculture, who recommended that this seedling be named after Luther Burbank, and the American Pomological Society introduced Prunus salicina ‘Burbank’ in 1897.
