Podocarpus totara
Tōtara
Podocarpus totara is a tall and pyramidal-growing tree that is covered with olive-green to bronze, needle-like leaves. Its new leaves are a fresh-green color, and its red-brown bark peels in long strips. It is very tough and can tolerate dry and windy conditions. It is easily trimmed to be used as a screen or hedge, and is an excellent choice as a street tree. Additionally, its yellow-green catkins, which appear in mid-spring to early-summer, are a source of pollen for bees. Evergreen and native to New Zealand. Learn more.
