The plums have purple-red skin and red flesh, and Plum ‘Satsuma’ produces white flowers during the spring season. The fruit typically ripens around late-summer and while Plum ‘Satsuma’ is partially self-fertile, planting it with Plum ‘Santa Rosa’ or Plum ‘Shiro’ can result in better yields. Additionally, the leaves of Plum ‘Satsuma’ turn yellow in the autumn months. Plum is deciduous and native to Russia, China, Taiwan, and Vietnam. Plum ‘Satsuma’ was selected by Luther Burbank (1849-1926) in Santa Rosa, California, United States from seedlings he received in 1885 from Isaac Bunting in Yokohama, Japan and was first sold in 1889.
