Persea americana ‘Zutano’
Avocado
Originating in Fallbrook, California in 1926 under R.L. Ruitt’s care, Persea americana ‘Zutano’ produce large fruit in winter and early spring. With a thin shiny skin, they are often used as pollinator trees. While self-fertile in warmer climats, Persea americana is classified as a B flowering type, so planting Persea americana ‘Zutano’ near a Persea americana ‘Reed’ or Persea americana ‘Hass’ enhances fruit production in colder climates. Plant in full sun with well-draining soil, and regularly fertilize in spring and summer. Persea americana ‘Zutano’ is recognized as one of the more cold-tolerant varieties.
