Thrives in coastal situations. Will tolerate poor soils, wet, and drought conditions. Forms a large, broad-headed tree with thick, grey-green leaves. A profusion of glowing, crimson-red flowers borne from early to mid-summer. They attract nectar-seeking birds. Can be pruned as hedges and screens or left as a specimen. Metrosideros excelsa (Pohutukawa) grows to 7m (H) x 7m (W) in 10 years.
