Apple ‘Freyberg’ produces sweet and refreshing, golden-green apples in the autumn. Apple ‘Freyberg’ also produces pink buds that open to white flowers in the spring. It is partially self-fertile, but it is best to plant it with another cultivar that has a similar bloom period, such as Apple ‘Fuji’, Apple ‘Gala’, and Apple ‘Granny Smith’. Apple is deciduous and native to Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and China. Apple ‘Freyberg’ was developed in the early 1900s by James Hutton Kidd in Greytown, New Zealand. The seedlings he developed were transferred to the New Zealand Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, who released Apple ‘Freyberg’ in 1959. Apple ‘Freyberg’ was named after Bernard Freyberg who served as Governor-General of New Zealand from 1946 to 1952.
