As its leaves emerge in the spring, Magnolia x brooklynensis ‘Yellow Bird’ produces a profusion of beautiful yellow flowers with six tepals that typically range from 7.5cm to 10cm in length. When the flowers first open, they may have a slight green tinge. Magnolia x brooklynensis ‘Yellow Bird’ has an upright, pyramidal growth habit. Magnolia x brooklynensis is deciduous, not native to New Zealand, and a hybrid between Magnolia acuminata and Magnolia liliiflora. Magnolia x brooklynensis was first crossed in the 1950s by Evamaria Sperber at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Kitchawan Research Station in New York City, New York, United States. Magnolia x brooklynensis ‘Yellow Bird’ is a hybrid between Magnolia x brooklynensis ‘Evamaria’ and Magnolia acuminata var. subcordata. ‘Yellow Bird’ was raised by Doris Stone in 1967 at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Kitchawan Research Station in New York City, New York, United States.
