Magnolia ‘Sweet Merlot’ produces medium-sized, globe-shaped flowers that are colored purple-red with pale red-pink interiors. It bears a profusion of flowers in the spring, which are great for cutting. Magnolia ‘Sweet Merlot’ has a neat, conical shape. Magnolia ‘Sweet Merlot’ is deciduous, not native to New Zealand, and a hybrid between Magnolia x soulangeana ‘Sweet Simplicity’ and Magnolia ‘Black Tulip’. Magnolia ‘Sweet Merlot’ was selected before 2008 by Vance Hooper in Waitara, Taranaki, New Zealand.
