Magnolia ‘Star Wars’ produces rich purple-pink flowers with pale-pink interiors that appear before or with the new spring leaves. The flowers are typically 15cm wide, but can occasionally reach up to 28cm wide. It begins to flower in the spring from an early age and continues to bloom for six to eight weeks. Sometimes, it will also have another period of flowering in the summer. An excellent choice for a street tree, and it grows upright, bushy, and compact. Magnolia ‘Star Wars’ is deciduous, not native to New Zealand, and a hybrid between Magnolia campbellii and Magnolia liliiflora. ‘Star Wars’ was raised in the 1970s by Oswald Blumhardt in Whangārei, New Zealand.
