Magnolia ‘Shirazz’ produces large, spectacular, tulip-shaped flowers in a rich purple-red color with pale-purple interiors. The heavily-textured flowers open out flat and are about 20cm wide, featuring around 9 tepals that are approximately 11cm long by 6cm wide. The flowers are also blessed with a fruity fragrance. Magnolia ‘Shirazz’ has an upright growth habit when young, which becomes more rounded as it ages. The flowers appear in early spring. Magnolia ‘Shirazz’ is deciduous, not native to New Zealand, and a hybrid between Magnolia denudata and Magnolia ‘Vulcan’. Magnolia ‘Shirazz’ was selected in 1993 by Vance Hooper at Duncan & Davies Nurseries in New Plymouth, New Zealand.
