Magnolia ‘Lois’ produces well-formed, cup-shaped blooms with bright-yellow color, which emerge from green buds. The flowers are up to 8cm long and have nine tepals. They typically appear alongside the leaves during a period of four to five weeks in mid to late-spring. Magnolia ‘Lois’ has a rounded, conical shape and is considered to be one of the best yellow magnolias available. Magnolia ‘Lois’ is deciduous, not native to New Zealand, and a hybrid between Magnolia acuminata and the hybrid formed between Magnolia acuminata and Magnolia denudata. Magnolia ‘Lois’ was produced in 1964 by Lola Koerting at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden in New York City, New York, United States and was named in 1998 after Lois Carswell, a trustee of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
