Magnolia ‘Black Tulip’ is perfect for smaller gardens due to its compact and upright growth habit. It blooms in mid-spring, producing cup-shaped, thick-textured flowers with a glowing dark-purple color. The flowers are typically 15cm wide and can withstand windy conditions. Additionally, Magnolia ‘Black Tulip’ begins flowering at a young age. It is deciduous, not native to New Zealand, and a hybrid between Magnolia ‘Vulcan’ and Magnolia ‘Iolanthe’. ‘Black Tulip’ was raised by Mark Jury in Tikorangi, Taranaki, New Zealand and introduced in 1998 (PVR 1498).
