Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Burgundy’

Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Burgundy’ is a selected clone with a narrower, pyramidal form when young, which broadens with age. It features larger maple-shaped leaves that emerge earlier than other cultivars. In the autumn, the leaves of Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Burgundy’ turn a rich, red-burgundy color, which persist well into winter, providing seasonal interest. Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Burgundy’ is known to color well in all climates and is an excellent choice for use as a street tree. It is important to note that in dry soil, Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Burgundy’ produces a taproot that helps reinforce it against wind, but in wetter soil, it only grows superficial roots and cannot tolerate much wind. Liquidambar styraciflua is native from central and eastern United States to Central America. Liquidambar styraciflua ‘Burgundy’ was selected in 1963 by the Saratoga Horticultural Foundation in California, United States.
