Ilex x meserveae ‘Blue Angel’ is a female cultivar and features dark, blue-green, soft, spiny leaves with purple-black stems. It is a slow, dense, upright grower and produces a profusion of small, white blossoms during the summer. To attain scarlet red berries in autumn, it is recommended to plant Ilex x meserveae ‘Blue Angel’ in combination with the male pollinator Ilex x meserveae ‘Blue Prince’. Ilex x meserveae ‘Blue Angel’ can tolerate semi-shade and cold conditions. Ilex x meserveae is evergreen, not native to New Zealand, and a hybrid between Ilex aquifolium and Ilex rugosa. Ilex x meserveae was first crossed by Kathleen Meserve in St. James, New York in the 1950s. Ilex x meserveae ‘Blue Angel’ was developed by Kathleen Meserve in St. James, New York in the 1950s (USPP03662).
