Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’ was discovered by Norihiro Shibamichi on Mount Daisen, Japan. Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’ found its way to the private collection of Masato Yokoi in Kawaguchi, Japan. Masato then donated propogation material to Sylvester March and Frederick Darke during a United States National Arboretum collecting trip in 1985. Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’ was then introduced into commerce by the United States National Arboretum in 1992.
