Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’

Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’ has a narrow, columnar-growing habit with small, dark-green, spineless leaves. It is an excellent option for use as a screen, as it doesn’t require side pruning. Additionally, Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’ is a great option for use in containers or as a focal point in a contemporary garden due to its unique appearance. Ilex crenata is evergreen and native to eastern China, Japan, Korea, Taiwan, and Sakhalin Island. Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’ was discovered by Norihiro Shibamichi on Mount Daisen, Japan. Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’ found its way to the private collection of Masato Yokoi in Kawaguchi, Japan. Masato then donated propogation material to Sylvester March and Frederick Darke during a United States National Arboretum collecting trip in 1985. Ilex crenata ‘Sky Pencil’ was then introduced into commerce by the United States National Arboretum in 1992.
