Attractive erect-growing specimen tree with dark-green leaves. Small, white flowers in late-spring to late-summer are followed by large, orange fruit in early-autumn to mid-winter. Need to plant more than one tree (male and female) for fruit. Needs good soil with adequate moisture and shelter from frosts.

Genus: Hedycarya, hedycarya, derived from the Greek adjective ἡδύς (hēdús, 'sweet') and noun κάρυον (káruon, 'nut [specifically a hard-shelled seed]'), meaning 'sweet-nutted, sweet-seeded', in reference to birds flocking to eat the fruit of species in this genus, presumably because they taste good.
