Genus: Ginkgo, ginkgo, a misspelling of the Japanese noun ginkyō, the Japanese name for Ginkgo biloba. This misspelling was first transcribed by the German naturalist, physician, and explorer Engelbert Kaempfer (1651 - 1716) in his book Amoenitatum Exoticarum. He was the first Westerner to see the species Ginkgo biloba. The misspelling was then included by Carl Linnaeus (1707 - 1778) in his book Mantissa Plantarum Altera, and the misspelling stuck as the generic name. A genus of non-flowering seed plants native to China.
