Genus: Garrya, garrya (Latinised), named after the British trader Nicholas Garry (1782 - 1852). Commonly known as silktassel or tassel bush, a genus of flowering shrubs native to Mexico, the western United States, Central America, and the Greater Antilles.
Species: Garrya elliptica, ellīptica (Latin, adjective), meaning 'elliptical [in the shape of an ellipse or oval]', in reference to the shape of this species' leaves.
