Elaeocarpus hookerianus is a cold-tolerant forest tree that thrives in various terrains, from valleys to mountainous areas. It has a distinctive juvenile form, as the branches interlace, with tiny leaves that become large light green leaves in its mature form. Elaeocarpus hookerianus flowers in from late spring to early summer, with delicate white blossoms hanging in small clusters, creating a lacy appearance. This followed by dark purple oval-shaped fruit that are fleshy, resembling an olive. Elaeocarpus hookerianus is native to New Zealand, in both main islands and Stewart Island, named after Sir Joseph Dalton Hooker, a famous botanist.
