Dacrydium cupressinum
Rimu
Dacrydium cupressinum is a slow-growing species that can be easily planted in a home garden for up to fifty years. When young, it has a pyramidal crown and drooping branches, but as it matures, it develops a round-topped crown with sturdy lateral branches that carry drooping twigs and leaves. During winter, the foliage of young trees may turn bronze, but in spring, it returns to its green color. In mid-spring to mid-summer, it produces green catkins that are a good source of pollen for bees. From mid-summer to mid-autumn, Dacrydium cupressinum bears orange-red fruit that grows under a purple-black seed, but the seed is only produced every few years. Dacrydium cupressinum is evergreen and native to New Zealand. Learn more.
