Cyathea cunninghamii
Pūnui
Cyathea cunninghamii is a slender-trunked grower, similar to Cyathea smithii, but when mature, it has a clean trunk without the skirt of dead frond stalks seen on Cyathea smithii. It naturally grows in damp forest areas, particularly in stream gullies and riverbanks. However, it has a lower tolerance for drought than other tree fern species, and it prefers to grow in moist environments. Cyathea cunninghamii is evergreen and native to New Zealand in the North Island, South Island, and Chatham Islands and also to the states of Victoria, New South Wales, Queensland, and Tasmania in Australia.
