Cyathea cunninghamii is a slender-trunked grower, similar to Cyathea smithii, but when mature, it has a clean trunk without the skirt of dead frond stalks seen on Cyathea smithii. It naturally grows in damp forest areas, particularly in stream gullies and riverbanks. However, it has a lower tolerance for drought than other tree fern species, and it prefers to grow in moist environments.
