Corylus avellana ‘Merveille de Bollwiller’
Hazelnut
Corylus avellana ‘Merveille de Bollwiller’ grows vigorously and yields large, high-quality nuts that ripen from red-orange to brown in late summer to early autumn. It serves as a valuable pollinator for other hazelnut cultivars such as Corylus avellana ‘Barcelona’ and Corylus avellana ‘Whiteheart’. Hazelnut trees thrive in regions with mild summers and cool winters but require protection from wind and high temperatures in summer. The ideal temperature range is an annual average of 12°C to 16°C, with a maximum of 35°C to 36°C and a minimum of -8°C to -10°C. For optimal growth, annual rainfall should be evenly distributed throughout the growing season and range from 800mm to 1000mm. In areas that experience prolonged dry spells, particularly from late spring to mid-summer, and where the soil is free-draining (sandy or stony), irrigation will be necessary. Corylus avellana is evergreen and native to Europe and western Asia. Learn more about Corylus avellana. Corylus avellana ‘Merveille de Bollwiller’ originated in 1788 as a seedling selection by C. G. Bultner in Halle, Germany.
