Cornus kousa ‘Beni-fuji’ was produced by Nobuo Yamashita, Hisao Ishikawa, Toshihiro Hagiwara at their nursery in Shinkyo, Gotenba-shi, Shizuoka-ken, Japan. In 1970, they planted a number of seeds they had collected from Cornus kousa trees growing on the southeastern slopes of Mount Fuji. In the subsequent years, they selected seedlings with an unusually high amount of red coloration in their leaves and the tips of their stems. Eventually, from this selection they selected Cornus kousa ‘Beni-fuji’ in June 1978 (USPP8676P).
