Taxonomy and Etymology
Family: Bignoniaceae, bignonia or trumpetvine family, a family of flowering plants.
Genus: Catalpa, catalpa, derived from the Muscogee name for Catalpa speciosa, kutuhlpa, which means 'winged head', in reference to the appearance of the flowers of species in this genus. Commonly known as catalpa or catawba, a genus of flowering plants that are native to warm temperate and subtropical regions of North America, the Caribbean, and East Asia.
Species: Catalpa bignonioides, bignonioides, derived from the genus name Bignonia and the Latin suffix oides (like, similar to), in reference to this species' similarity to a species in the genus Bignonia.
