Butia capitata
Jelly Palm
Butia capitata is a resilient palm that adapts well to a range of climates and soil conditions. Although it thrives in full sun, it can also tolerate partial shade. With deeper roots than many other palms, it becomes drought-tolerant once established, provided summer rainfall is sufficient. Dead fronds should only be pruned when they are completely brown, as they continue to nourish new growth. In summer, Butia capitata produces small, creamy yellow flowers in long spikes, which are later followed by clusters of sweet, orange-yellow fruits with a pineapple-like flavor. Butia capitata is evergreen and native to Brazil, Uruguay, and Argentina.
