Taxonomy and Etymology
Family: Malvaceae, mallow family, a family of flowering plants.
Genus: Brachychiton, brachychiton, derived from the Greek adjective βραχύς (brakhús, 'short') and noun χιτών (khitṓn, 'tunic'), in reference to species in this genus having loose seed coatings. Commonly known as bottletree or kurrajong, a genus of trees and large shrubs native to Australia and New Guinea.
Species: Brachychiton acerifolius, acerifolius, derived from the Latin nouns acer (maple tree) and folius (leaf), meaning 'maple-leaved', in reference to the shape of this species' leaves resembling those of the maples in the genus Acer.
