Genus: Berberis, berberis (Latin, noun), probably referring to species of this genus growing in Europe or specifically Spain. Possibly derived from the Arabic noun barbārīs (barberry). Commonly known as barberry, a genus of deciduous and evergreen shrubs.
Species: Berberis thunbergii, thunbergii (Latinised), named after the Swedish naturalist Carl Peter Thunberg (1743 - 1828) who sent the species from Japan to Europe.
