Avocado ‘Hass’ is the most commonly-grown avocado cultivar in the world. Its fruit has a very nutty, rich taste, and the flesh has a smooth texture with a thick skin-casing. When the fruit is ripe, the skin turns purple-black. It is typically harvested from late spring to early autumn. While it is self-fertile, it produces better crops when planted alongside Avocado ‘Bacon’. Avocado ‘Hass’ forms a thick canopy with a spreading habit. Avocado is evergreen and native to Central America from Mexico to Costa Rica. Learn more about Avocado. Avocado ‘Hass’ was planted in 1926 by Rudolph Hass in La Habra Heights, California, United States. Rudolph bought the seedling from A. R. Rideout of Whittier, California, United States.
