Apple ‘Granny Smith’ bears a green-skinned apple that is excellent for both eating and cooking, featuring a good, crisp texture. The fruit is large and ripens in mid-autumn, and it is known for being an excellent keeper. During spring, the pink buds of Apple ‘Granny Smith’ develop into white flowers. Although Apple ‘Granny Smith’ is self-fertile, planting it with Apple ‘Golden Delicious’ or Apple ‘Red Delicious’ can lead to better crops. Apple is deciduous and native to Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and China. Apple ‘Granny Smith’ originated in 1868 in Eastwood, New South Wales, Australia and was named after Maria Ann Smith who discovered and then propagated Malus domestica ‘Granny Smith’ from a chance seedling.
