Apple ‘Gala’ bears yellow-skinned apples with a red flush, and its juicy, creamy flesh boasts a rich flavor. The fruit becomes ripe from late summer to early autumn, while the pink buds unfurl into white flowers during spring. Although partially self-fertile, optimal fruit production requires a cultivar such as Apple ‘Fuji’, Apple ‘Golden Delicious’, or Apple ‘Red Delicious’ that has a comparable bloom period. Apple is deciduous and native to Afghanistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and China. Apple ‘Gala’ was developed in the early 1900s by James Hutton Kidd in Greytown, New Zealand. The seedlings he developed were transferred to the New Zealand Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, who released Apple ‘Gala’.
