Aesculus x carnea
Red Horse Chestnut
Aesculus x carnea has a wide, round head and large, fan-shaped dark-green leaves. It produces giant red flower candles in late-spring, and glossy-brown nuts in the autumn, which are toxic to both humans and animals. The foliage may scorch in very dry or windy conditions. Can be challenging to transplant once established due to its taproot. It is ideal for use as a shade, avenue, or paddock tree, and it displays beautiful golden-yellow leaves during the autumn season. Aesculus x carnea prefers moist and well-drained soil and does not tolerate dry soil well. It is deciduous, not native to New Zealand, and a hybrid between Aesculus pavia and Aesculus hippocastanum.
