Aesculus indica
Indian Horse Chestnut
Aesculus indica has large and attractive leaves that initially appear as bronze-green in spring and then mature to a dark-green hue by summer. It produces frilly, white flower panicles in early to mid-summer, about a month later than Aesculus hippocastanum. The white flowers have a red flush and yellow spots. In autumn, Aesculus indica bears glossy-brown nuts that are toxic to humans and animals. It is an excellent shade tree, and its leaves turn beautiful shades of orange and yellow during the autumn season. Aesculus indica thrives in moist, well-drained soil and does not tolerate dry soil well. Aesculus indica is deciduous and native to the Himalayan Lowlands, between Kashmir and Western Nepal at elevations between 900 and 3,000 metres. Learn more about Aesculus indica.
