Acer rubrum ‘Red Sunset’

Acer rubrum ‘Red Sunset’ produces large, fresh-green leaves that transition to a spectacular orange-red color during the autumn season. It has a broad, columnar head growth habit and bears small, red flowers during the early to mid-spring period. Acer rubrum ‘Red Sunset’ thrives in moist, well-drained soil and full-sun conditions, but it is also capable of growing in a range of soils, including sandy, heavy clay, peat, dry, and poor-draining soil. Additionally, Acer rubrum ‘Red Sunset’ is cold-hardy and able to tolerate windy conditions. Acer rubrum is deciduous and native to eastern North America. Acer rubrum ‘Red Sunset’ was introduced in 1966 and developed in the 1940s by J. Frank Schmidt, Jr. of J. Frank Schmidt & Son Co. Wholesale Nursery in Boring, Oregon, United States.
