Rich-crimson spring leaves turn bronze-purple in summer and then go scarlet in autumn. Prefers moist, well-drained soils. May suffer leaf scorch from excess sun, wind, and drought. Cold hardy and great for bonsai.

Cultivar Origin: This cultivar by rights belongs to Louis van Houtte's nursery which he established in 1839 at Gentbrugge near Ghent, Belgium. Described in Flore des Serres, Vol. 12, 1857, t. 1273. Since 1857, new seedlings and clones have been selected and distributed under this cultivar name.
