Acer negundo ‘Variegatum’ has an attractive, neat and upright growth habit with grey-green leaves that have silver edges and are flushed with rose-pink when young. It is hardy and quick-growing and its leaves turn yellow in the autumn. Acer negundo ‘Variegatum’ produces small, yellow-green flowers in early to mid-spring, but is intolerant of shade and strong winds. Its seeds are toxic to horses, but it tolerates air pollution, drought, and occasionally water-logged soils once established. Acer negundo ‘Variegatum’ is also cold hardy. Acer negundo is deciduous and native to south-central Canada, much of the United States, and Guatemala. Acer negundo ‘Variegatum’ first appeared as a sport on the green-leaved type at a nursery in Toulouse, France in 1845.
