Genus: Acer, ācer (Latin, adjective), meaning 'sharp', in reference to the pointed leaves. Commonly known as maple, a genus of various trees and shrubs.
Species: Acer negundo, negundo (Latin, noun), derived from the Sanskrit name for Vitex negundo, nirguṇḍī. Vitex negundo has similar leaves to Acer negundo.
Variety: Acer negundo var. violaceum, violāceum (Latin), meaning 'violet', in reference to the colour of the stems.
