Genus: Acer, ācer (Latin, adjective), meaning 'sharp', in reference to the pointed leaves. Commonly known as maple, a genus of various trees and shrubs.
Species: Acer monspessulanum, monspessulanum, derived from Monspessulanus, which is the Latinised name of the French city of Montpellier.
