In the past, we have seen too many trees planted incorrectly. Most of them were planted too deep. Planting too deep will cause trees to slowly shut down and die because of the lack of warmth and air. The phloem and cambium layers of the trunk (which are the layers of cells that transport the food supply up the tree) will slowly die, and starve the whole tree of nutrients. Ultimately, this will kill the tree.
Over 80% of tree planting failures are due to the tree being planted too deep. Taking the time to do it right from the start makes all the difference.

Preparing the Planting Site
To prepare, dig a hole large enough to comfortably fit the tree’s root ball, usually about twice its width and the same depth as the root ball itself. Ensure the hole is well dug to give roots space to expand naturally.
Removing grass or weeds from the planting site reduces competition and helps the tree establish better.

Follow these steps for a successful tree planting:

Dig the hole to the right size — about twice the root ball width and equal depth.

Remove the tree from its pot or wrap, taking care to avoid root damage.

Place the tree in the hole with the root collar (flare) just above ground level.
- Mix Fertilizer with the backfill soil. We recommend a slow-release fertilizer for best results.

Backfill with the original soil, firming gently to remove air pockets. You should still be able to see the original soil from the bag around the base of the tree.
- Fertilize a small amount on the top of the soil.

Water well immediately after planting to settle the soil.

Apply mulch around the base, keeping it clear from the trunk to prevent rot.

Stake the tree if it’s tall or in a windy spot, but remove stakes after the tree has established. 3 stakes are recommended for windy areas.
