Ulmus ‘Frontier’
Elm
Ulmus ‘Frontier’ forms a vase-shaped structure with a rounded head and features small, dark-green leaves that turn into a glowing burgundy color in the autumn season. The leaves can persist well into the winter months, adding to the ornamental value of Ulmus ‘Frontier’. Ulmus ‘Frontier’ is tolerant of moderate coastal winds and drought, making it a great choice as a shade tree in coastal regions. It does not produce seeds, which is an advantage for landscapes where seed dispersal is unwanted. Additionally, Ulmus ‘Frontier’ is highly resistant to Dutch elm disease and is an excellent choice for use as a street tree. Ulmus ‘Frontier’ is a hybrid between Ulmus carpinifolia (syn. Ulmus minor) and Ulmus parvifolia. Ulmus ‘Frontier’ is deciduous, not native to New Zealand, and was developed in 1971 by the United States National Arboretum in Washington, D.C., United States and was released in 1990.
